Sedimentary and tectonic processes on a Late Jurassic passive margin and its inversion during Alpine orogeny in the Lofer area
Guide: Hugo Ortner & Diethard Sanders
This field trip will give an overview of Jurassic to Cretaceous sedimentation 40 km SW of Salzburg, and discuss the relevance of clastic intervals in the succession for interpretation of the geodynamic evolution of this part of the Northern Calcareous Alps. We will inspect Upper Jurassic deep-water breccias (Schwarzenbergklamm breccia, Grubhörndl breccia), and discuss their relation to Upper Jurassic transgressive successions (Lofer beds, „Oberalmer Basiskonglomerat“) and shallow-water limestones exposed in klippen thrust over the deep-water succession during the Cretaceous orogeny.
