Composition, technology and provenance of archaeological artifacts
Conveners: Corina Ionescu, Bernadett Bajnóczi, Antonín Přichystal
In the last years many studies in Europe and worldwide concentrated on archaeological artifacts. As most of these artefacts (lithic tools and weapons, ceramics, glasses, mortars and plasters, decorative stone and metal objects, as well as gemstones) are derived from minerals and rocks, the scientific approach in terms of geosciences is inevitable. The according research leads to basic information on the composition, structure and texture, indispensable for the scientific classification of the artifacts and their genetic interpretation involving technology and provenance. Such investigations have a long tradition in the CBGA countries. The CBGA Congress in 2018 will offer the opportunity to gather geologists, mineralogists, physicists, chemists and archaeologists to present and discuss their achievements.
